In June 1963, a small group of city employees met in an upstairs room of the South Main Street Fire Station (now the Attleboro Council on aging) to discuss forming a municipal credit union. This credit union would provide a convenient means of saving, and also provide members with low interest loans.

In June 1963, a small group of city employees met in an upstairs room of the South Main Street Fire Station (now the Attleboro Council on aging) to discuss forming a municipal credit union. This credit union would provide a convenient means of saving, and also provide members with low interest loans. Mr. Edward Healey, the City Treasurer, carried the credit union money around in a cigar box. The interested persons brought the idea to the city council for their approval to allow the City Treasurer, Edward Healey, to withhold payroll deductions. The City officials were reluctant for fear of financial costs, but were reassured. On December 17, 1963, Attleboro city employees’ half-year-old proposal for adoption of a credit union was approved.

On January 12, 1964, the organization certifications was approved and the official title was Attleboro Municipal Employees Federal Credit Union. Melvin M. Adams (Finberg School principal) was elected as our first president and also chairman of the Board of Directors. Mr. Adams presided until 1967.

In March 1967, Sam Fine was elected president. There were now 261 members, and payroll deductions were finally authorized. President Sam Fine, a wonderful person, held monthly board meetings in his home where his wife served delightful refreshments. Sam held the office of president until he retired at the age of 85 in 1983.

Burdon (Buster) Blanchard, co-founder and charter member of the Credit Union, was elected president in February 1983. In 2002 under Buster’s leadership, we purchased our building here at 138 South Main Street. Buster was a strong leader who encouraged belt-tightening to ensure that the Credit Union prospered and remained safe and secure. Buster served us until his death in 2006.

Rudolph (Rudy) Bruneau, also a charter member of the Credit Union and a close friend of Buster, was unanimously elected to fill the shoes of Buster. Rudy served us quietly and efficiently for the short time he was president. Rudy died in 2008.

Our current president is Garry Billingkoff, also a charter member of the Credit Union. Garry is a powerful thinker who says we know who we are and what we want to become, and that ideas are our future.
