Escambia County Bank was established on March 14, 1924, by a relatively large group of local investors. A charter from the State of Alabama was approved by the Superintendent of Banks on April 21, 1924, and the Bank has operated continuously under the same charter since then. Two hundred fifty shares of stock at $100.00 per share were purchased by the stockholders to open the Bank with an initial capital base of $25,000.

J.B. Barnett of Monroeville served as the first president and John W. Taylor of Century served as Vice President. The original directors were J.B. Barnett, R.G. Crafton, W.H. McCloud, J.D. McCurdy, John W. Taylor, and Dr. J.S. Turberville.

Escambia County Bank was initially located in a small building in the first block of Palafox Street north of the railroad tracks. Sometime in the late 1920s the Bank moved to its current location at the corner of Palafox and Ringold. The portion of the Bank closest to the corner is still that original building, including the unique corner entrance.

Like most small banks of the time, rough going was encountered during the depression years of the 1930s. Even though the Bank did not close, growth was nonexistent. In addition, a devastating flood occurred in 1929 which destroyed many of the early pen and ink records of the Bank.

After these struggles and those of World War II, the Bank and its market began to experience some growth and prosperity. The Jones family began to take an active role in management, first with Houston Jones serving as Chairman and President. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, his sons, Carl Jones and Fred Jones, succeeded as management of the Bank. Fred Jones was actively involved in the management of the Bank until 1975. Carl Jones was actively involved in the management of the Bank until his passing in 1995.

In the peace and stability of the post-war years, the Bank and Tri-County communities grew and prospered. Escambia County Bank was remodeled and enlarged in each of the decades of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. In 1999, the Bank underwent major renovations in order to provide a more modern facility to meet future challenges.

James R. Jones (J.R.), Carl Jones’ son, became the Bank president in 1977. James R. Jones then took on the role as CEO in 1981. Under his leadership, Escambia County Bank was marked by strength, stability, community service and solid growth. James R. Jones retired as President and CEO in 2017. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board.

Charles J. McCutchin is the Bank’s current President and CEO. Under his leadership, the Bank continues to be an integral part of our community.

Leadership of the Bank is provided by the current Board of Directors: James R. Jones; Laurence H. Jones; J. Merlin Edwards; Joseph L. McMath, Jr.; Walter A. DeWitt; Charles J. McCutchin; Nettie W. Scott; William M. McCann, Jr.; and William M. Cox.
