River Town Federal Credit Union began in 1958 as a state-chartered credit union. It was formed by a group of Sparks Hospital employees wanting the benefit of savings and loan products.

In 1986, the credit union was granted a federal charter allowing more growth by including other employer groups. In 2004, the Board of Directors amended the bylaws to change the name from Sparks Federal Credit Union to River Town Federal Credit Union. The name, River Town Federal Credit Union, was selected because it best reflects the surrounding area and one of the city’s greatest resources: the Arkansas River.

In April 2021, River Town was approved by the NCUA Office of Credit Union Resources and Expansion to become a Community Charter Credit Union, opening eligibility to all people in Sebastian, Crawford, or Sequoyah County. We are an approved Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), meaning that we have a primary mission of promoting community development. River Town FCU is excited to be able to serve the people in all of these communities who can now benefit from lower loan rates, fewer fees, and a voice in what happens at the credit union.
