The first Credit Union was created in 1849 in Germany by a group of farmers that pooled their money together in an effort to receive better rates than the lenders of that time. These people created the foundation for individual creditability such as “one member, one vote” which we hear about in many important instances today. The first actual U.S. Credit Union called St. Mary’s Bank opened in 1909. It was not called a Credit Union because there was no such term at this time. This Credit Union served the parishioners of St. Mary’s Church in New Hampshire and is still operating today. This organization started a way of thinking that provided a “People Helping people" environment in which the common man could relate. These practices are still present today even in this hectic society.
