GPCE Credit Union, a Division of FSU Credit Union has been serving its members since 1954. Today we are continuing this journey by providing our members with even more services and benefits. Our management team and dedicated board of directors have always had our members’ best interests at heart, making decisions to strengthen the credit union as a whole.
Little known fact, GPCE Credit Union, a Division of FSU Credit Union was actually started by the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers). Our name began as I.B.E.W. Credit Union. Our original field of membership consisted exclusively of members of the IBEW.
Years later, as the credit union grew, the IBEW approached Gulf Power Company for assistance with some of the management duties of running a credit union. During those discussions it was decided to expand the field of membership from just the IBEW members to all Gulf Power employees. Our credit union name was then changed to Gulf Power Company Employees Credit Union (GPCE Credit Union).
The late Ben Austin was the credit union’s first operating officer, volunteering as a liaison between the company employees and the credit union. And, our first credit union location was a small office space provided by Gulf Power in the old company corporate office on Pace Boulevard.
Fast forward over the last 66 years and you will note the steady growth of GPCE Credit Union, a Division of FSU Credit Union! We had 49 million in assets with over 3,000 members prior to our merger with Florida State University Credit Union in October 2020. We also had three branch locations serving regions within Pensacola and Panama City, Florida. In addition, Anita Cooper was the longest serving CEO the credit union has had since her promotion in 1998.
On October 1, 2020, GPCE Credit Union, a Division of FSU Credit Union officially merged with Florida State University Credit Union. This partnership will bring a brighter financial future to GPCE Credit Union, a Division of FSU Credit Union members. Membership is now open to Florida State University alumni living anywhere in the U.S. and anyone who lives or works in Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Taylor, Wakulla, Walton, or Washington counties.
These are just a few stories of the history of our credit union. Many people have joined our family along the way. Although we have experienced changes, our service to YOU has not changed. Above all else, we’re here for you with caring, friendly and knowledgeable staff, serving your financial needs through the years and generations.
