Healthcare Plus Federal Credit Union had a very humble beginning with its origination in 1979. As with most credit unions, a small group of people pooled their funds to create a source for loans to serve the financial needs of employees of St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, SD. Those same people volunteered their time to nurture, manage, and direct the affairs of their fledgling cooperative. We have embarked upon expansion efforts to diversify our membership and over the years our membership has grown to encompass anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Brown County. This has enabled members of our community to participate in a not-for-profit member-owned financial institution.
From our beginning in 1979 to present day, we have grown from a small one room office serving the needs of St. Luke’s employees, to now operating multiple offices on Dakota Street. Through the years we have not forgotten the reason we were established as our mission statement says: To Provide quality financial products and services to best meet the needs of our current and future members. It is our mission statement that keeps our direction moving forward. Although much has changed over the decades, the most important factors remain the same. HCPFCU is a not-for-profit cooperative, owned by its members, and led by an unpaid volunteer Board of Directors. The Credit Union was formed solely for the benefit of its member-owners for the purpose of providing the very best service, rates and products. That commitment remains our focus to this day.
In the midst of our years of growth we changed our name to reflect our expanded membership base from Li’l Luke’s Federal Credit Union to Healthcare Plus Federal Credit Union. This was done in 1999. Our name reflects our original common bond of serving healthcare facilities, but the Plus was added to show our ability to serve others that may be interested in joining our credit union. We feel the Plus also reflects the added service that our credit union can provide to our members!
